HEALTH AND SAFETY ALL AT SEA – ADMIRAL NELSON AND HARDY BATTLE IT OUT IN LEICESTER

How would Admiral Nelson and Captain Hardy have managed the crew of HMS Victory in these health and safety conscious times? With their imaginary flagship renamed HMS Appeasement, two managers from Fox’s Confectionery, based in Leicester, revelled in the role play as they attempted to impart modern health and safety rules and regulations on board! Has the world gone mad? No, it was all part of a special Health and Safety Awareness Day for 21 team leaders and engineers from the company.

Keeping abreast of Health and Safety issues is important for any organisation, and something Fox’s clearly embrace as an essential ingredient in their long-running success story. But Martin Horn, Fox’s Confectionery Health & Safety Advisor wanted something that would ‘keep their staff awake’ as well as contributing to their continually improving safety record, reputation and future as a progressive employer in the area. He contacted The LMT (Leadership and Management Training) Co Ltd, because he had heard that this was one organisation which did not deliver just training, more of a training experience!

With candidates split into two groups over two weeks, subjects included regulations specific to the food industry; duty of care and the law; environmental issues and hot work in confined places!

Another criteria was for the candidates to have fun…Mary Brooks of The LMT explained: “Many people in business would be aghast at the concept of having fun whilst embroiled in the issues of health and safety, but serious subject areas can be well received when using the fun factor to hammer home hard messages about the application of H&S in the workplace, and keeping employees safe and well.”

The training was delivered by a NEBOSH qualified and CIEH registered trainer from The LMT Co Ltd – and adding to the fun factor balloons, newspapers, staplers, scissors and Christmas decorations were used over the two days, with not a polar bear in sight! (Fox’s iconic trade mark which used to adorn reception at their Braunstone HQ, now resides happily in Leicester Museum).

Martin Horn commented: “The course was designed around our specific needs and all of the participants reported that they not only learned a great deal from attending but also thoroughly enjoyed the experience.” Not many people can say they enjoy Health & Safety training!

The Fox’s candidates threw themselves into the training with enthusiasm and were very upbeat at the end of the sessions and will go on to maintain the company’s fine Health & Safety record. All received Continuing Professional Development Certificates at the end of the course.
